Tone · Entry 07

Dull skin

Dullness is an optical problem with three physical causes: a rough surface that scatters light, a dehydrated corneum that absorbs it, and oxidative load that yellows the tone. All three are addressable in weeks.

How it reads
A grey cast, no light off the cheekbone, makeup sitting rather than settling.
Mechanism
Slowed shedding and reduced surface reflectance
Honest timeline
Fourteen days to a visible change in how light behaves on the skin
Often arrives with
Dehydrated skin · Pigmentation · Loss of firmness

Processes involved

The biology
underneath

  1. Desquamation slowingThe bonds between surface cells are broken down by enzymes that need water to work. Dehydrated skin sheds badly, so the surface roughens and scatters light instead of reflecting it.
  2. Surface reflectanceLight reflects off a hydrated, smooth corneum and scatters off a dry, irregular one. Most of what we call glow is a measurable optical property, not a claim.
  3. Oxidative loadFree radicals from UV and pollution oxidise surface lipids and drive glycation, both of which move the skin’s colour away from the pink-white end of the scale.

Why it happens

  1. Slowed shedding, leaving a thickened and uneven surface layer.
  2. Dehydration, which reduces surface reflectance directly and immediately.
  3. Oxidative stress and glycation, which shift tone toward grey and yellow.
  4. Sleep debt and smoking — both measurable in skin colourimetry.

When to see someone else

A sallow, persistently grey complexion alongside fatigue can reflect anaemia, thyroid or liver function. Worth a blood test before a new serum.

What has evidence here

Each active carries its own entry in the library, with mechanism, origin and the products it appears in.

Recommended ritual

Ritual de luminozitate

Three steps, and exfoliation stays capped at twice a week. Radiance is mostly hydration and smoothness — the acid does far less of the work than the hydration does.
