Firmness · Entry 08
Loss of firmness
Firmness is collagen architecture, elastin recoil and dermal water in a fixed proportion. All three decline predictably — around one percent of dermal collagen a year from the mid-twenties — and all three respond to intervention.
- How it reads
- Slackening along the jaw, deeper folds, skin that no longer springs back.
- Mechanism
- Declining collagen synthesis with rising enzymatic breakdown
- Honest timeline
- Twelve weeks, same light and same camera. Never judged in a mirror at night
- Often arrives with

Processes involved
The biology
underneath
- Collagen synthesis and turnoverFibroblasts build collagen I and III; enzymes break it down. Ageing shifts the ratio toward breakdown, so peptides that signal synthesis work best alongside antioxidants that slow degradation.
- Glycation and cross-linkingGlucose binds collagen fibres into advanced glycation end-products. Cross-linked collagen is stiffer, yellower and cannot be remodelled — prevention is the only real lever.
- Elastin lossElastin is laid down largely before adulthood and barely replaced. Protecting what remains matters more than any claim to rebuild it.
Why it happens
- Reduced fibroblast activity, and slower collagen I and III synthesis.
- Glycation — sugars cross-linking collagen into a stiffer, more brittle mesh.
- Enzymatic breakdown rising with UV exposure and oxidative stress.
- Oestrogen decline through perimenopause, which accelerates every one of the above.
When to see someone else
Cosmetics improve skin quality; they do not lift tissue. If the concern is volume or descent rather than surface firmness, we will tell you that instead of selling you a cream.
