Hydration & barrier · Entry 02
Compromised barrier
The barrier is brick and mortar: cells held in a lipid matrix of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids in roughly equal parts. Damage it and every other entry in this library gets worse at once.
- How it reads
- Everything stings. Products that used to work no longer do.
- Mechanism
- Disorganised lipid matrix and a raised surface pH
- Honest timeline
- Four weeks minimum, with no actives in the routine for the first two
- Often arrives with
- Sensitivity & redness · Dehydrated skin
Processes involved
The biology
underneath
- Lipid matrix disorganisationThe three lipid classes must sit at near-equal molar ratio to form the lamellar sheets that hold water in. Wrong ratio and the sheets do not assemble — which is why single-lipid creams underperform.
- pH and enzyme functionThe acid mantle sits near pH 5. Raise it and the enzymes that build lipids slow while the ones that break cells apart speed up. Barrier loss from both directions at once.
- Microbial shiftCommensal populations depend on that acidic, lipid-rich surface. When the barrier fails the microbial balance follows, and inflammation rises before anything is visible.
Why it happens
- Over-exfoliation, or two actives introduced in the same week.
- High-pH or sulfate cleansers, used twice daily for years.
- Cold, wind and indoor heating — a Romanian winter does this on its own.
- Underlying atopy, which lowers the threshold for all of the above.
When to see someone else
This is the one entry where we ask you to use less, including less of ours. Cleanser and moisturiser only. If skin is broken or weeping, see a doctor first.
What has evidence here
Each active carries its own entry in the library, with mechanism, origin and the products it appears in.
